Personality

In his youth, Dúrin's nickname was well-earned. His unshakeable conviction in his own fighting prowess and that SARAN would protect him resulted in his never backing out of a fight and his winning many against the odds by breaking the morale of the opposition. His reputation grew, and his self-belief grew even further. Ultimately this led to his famous Storming of the Gates of Hell as Lord of Gathol-Dválin to recover the lost Axe of Dválin, which he regarded as his rightful Magic Weapon.

In his maturity, Dúrin has recognised the wisdom of seeking sage counsel, and now often seeks the advice of Tandrys the Wise. But he always forms his own view. Such is his indomitable ego, after almost a century of unqualified adulation by Dwarfkind. Even the Axe, at this time of ascendancy of the power of Law, remains totally subservient to him. Whilst the Axe, his Faith and his Paladinhood will induce him to accept SARAN's view, he remains first and foremost a Dwarf, and he will not easily acquiesce in the elimination of his race, even for a higher ideal. Nor will he follow the leadership of a bunch of humans, but he would treat the Emperor of Valdrea as his social equal, even though the Emperor would be no match for him in a fight.

Dúrin could easily take the Kingship of All Dwarves if he were so minded. But, fortunately for the current incumbent, he has no interest in political power and sees the Lordship of Gathol-Dválin as the pinnacle of achievement for a Dwarven Paladin.

Past History / Background Information (Memories)

In the Year 1910 Dúrin the Reckless, greatest Hero and Paladin of SARAN since Dválin Strongarm himself, and the then Lord of Gathol-Dválin, stormed the Gates of Hell at the head of a Dwarven War Band, slew Cerberus Itself and personally recovered Dválin’s Axe (lost on the Fall of Dválin in the Year 1510) from the Treasure House of HALKI. He hacked his way back to his party through a virtual army of Balrogs, but he was grievously wounded (by Fire Damage, from which the Axe did not allow him to regenerate).

Before the Year 2000 history recorded that Dúrin died in that fight. His body was recovered by the rest of his party and Word of Recalled back to Dwarf Hold, where he was buried. The Dwarves then fled over the Sea to great Gabilkhazâd-Dűm to withstand a great Siege by ALTIS and ZAKEL. The intervention of SARAN and ESCUS forced the lifting of the Siege, and a few years later (in the Year 1917) the Dwarves returned to their Hold, rebuilt it and recommenced the Task of the Axe, which was from then borne by the current Lord of Gathol-Dválin.

But in Aval 2000 any recollection of a history in which this great Dwarven Hero was mortally wounded in his legendary assault upon Hell to recover the Axe is incorrect. In a World of such perfect Law, how could such a thing have happened? Dúrin was of course saved by the power of the Axe (which Final Appealed to SARAN to Heal him), and the legend has lived on these past 90 years.

Dúrin now probably represents the greatest independent power of Law on Earth. As wielder of the Axe of SARAN (as it is now known), he is aware of the growing Law in Valdran. SARAN has advised him in Commune to the same effect as she did Decus XX (that there is no cause for concern, as it is a good and great thing, which he should welcome and foster). But such is Dúrin's hubris that he will form his own view on the matter.

Possessions

As Lord of Gathol-Dválin, Dúrin has command of a private army of powerful and fanatically-loyal Dwarven adventurers, who would follow him to the Gates of Hell (and, indeed, are gagging for the chance to do just that in order to prove themselves worthy of their forefathers).  In over a hundred years of adventuring he has gathered a vast horde of treasure, but has little personal interest in wealth, and has spent much of it on Lawful causes, thus furthering the loyalty of his followers.
