Anarea 1-off D: Breaking the Law 7 to 26 Aval 2000
Scenario 1. (L)
Directly above them the Sun burst into light. Another sky of the clearest blue, and once again the temperature was just right. The seventh day of the new era dawned over the open roof of the Temple of the Sun Diamond.
The challengers stepped into the Arenas. Across the other sides the Emperors turned from their prayers before the Law, and rose to face them. This morning the Law had reached a radius of some 65 feet, and formed a pure-white opaque hemisphere, exactly half of it now being beneath the ground, although its centre point had not moved. The Temple had become a circus of three times the radius of the Law. Within it, around the Law, shone six duelling arenas, each of equal radius to the Law. Six doors led onto the six arenas, a challenger having entered through each door.
The Emperors Decus XX of Aven were quietly confident. This close to the Law everything was so much simpler. They were the defenders of the Law, and the challengers, Decus Champion of Mastrin, were all the opposition. The Emperors had prayed to SARAN and the Law through the night for victory, and it would be theirs. The stronger would be the winners: chance did not enter into it, and the Emperors knew themselves to be the stronger. Each duel would be exactly the same, move for move, and when they were over the Emperors would put the opposition to death. Nothing could stop them now. That was the Law.
Within the Temple of the Sun Diamond the Law State was +4.
6 * Decus XX of Aven (L): Champion of that House, Emperor of Valdrea: see separate Character Sheet and Character Specification spreadsheet.
SARAN (L): N/L Goddess of Law; Clerical, current usual B = 60% + 10% per level of Law = 100% within the Temple of the Sun Diamond (Consecrated to 35%) (on normal power, well in surplus) Location: in Her High Temple in Heaven / elsewhere, subject to the multipresence rules: She is only in the Law to the extent that She has some of Her power in the Sun Diamond.
SARAN is Goddess of Law, and therefore Her ultimate aim is the total assimilation of the universe into the purest Law. Under the Emperor Decus XX Her Empire on Earth has become so Lawful at its centre that this process has begun, and She must support and protect it. SARAN is not devoid of feeling for the world She has loved and the worshippers and servants who have followed Her loyally, which and who will inevitably be assimilated into the Law, along with Herself. But Her Aspect compels Her to further the Law and so that is what She must do. They will all achieve a higher and better plane of existence, without question.
SARAN will grant all Clerical Requests made during the Duel at Roll 99%. Decus XX do not know this, but are confident of Her power; so confident in fact that they might well make a Request at less than 99% Chance of Success.
The players may draw their own conclusions.
If they win the Duel, they will be the Emperors of Valdrea: Decus XXI. They will have the right, if they wish to exercise it, to put the losers to death. Decus XX will submit, and, indeed, will plead to be put to death if it is not done immediately. If they are spared Decus XX will be broken men (note this only applies to Decus XX himself once they return to a Law State of Neutrality). The Law Player may decide what they do next.
If they lose the Duel, the Emperors will exercise their right to put them to death, if they let them. The game will then be over, and it may be assumed that the Law will not be stopped. Whether or not this really amounts to a victory for the Law Player will not have been fully explored. The game may be restarted.
