Notes:

  1. Creates a Visual Illusion of an intricate multi-coloured, shifting pattern of light at the centre of the Radius of Effect, which has an hypnotic effect upon observers within the Radius of Effect.  It is readily distinguishable from a Clerical Symbol, but is not inconsistent with raw Chaos.  The Hypnotic Pattern creates no illumination itself.  Hypnotic Pattern is a Sight effect, which is seen irrespective of Light Intensity.
  2. Illusionist Sight Spells only affect living, seeing Beings.
  3. Potential Targets (i.e. SL <= Max. SL Affected) within the Radius of Effect and capable of seeing the Hypnotic Pattern (i.e. Sg >0) will be affected.  If they are within the Radius of Effect, they cannot avoid it by closing or covering their eyes or looking away (the st simulates success at this).  Physical or magical concealments which obstruct view within the Radius of Effect do not prevent the effect of the Pattern  (e.g. if cast in a house with a thin wall bisecting the Radius, a potential Target within the Radius on the other side of the wall will see an image of the Pattern on the wall).
  4. Outside the Radius, potential Targets must actually observe the Hypnotic Pattern in some detail to be affected. This includes studying or trying to identify the light effect using Thievish or Magical Spells or Effects that involve looking at the Pattern.  The Pattern can be concealed from observers outside the Radius using physical or magical concealments which obstruct view, but cannot be concealed within Darkness.
  5. If a Pattern has been rendered Invisible, it can only be seen (even within Radius of Effect) by observers capable of Seeing Invisible objects.
  6. Hypnotic Pattern has no effect upon Caster.
  7. Level Points are distributed each second by allocating Saving Level ("SL") points to each Target within Radius of Effect in turn, starting with those of lowest SL and working up, then allocating Level Points to each closely observing Target outside the Radius, starting with those of lowest level and working up. Where SLs are equal, select randomly. Targets must have SL Level Points allocated to them and have SL <= Max. SL affected, or they will be unaffected.
  8. A Hypnotised Target is transfixed in place (at D=0), losing control of his mind and senses.  He will be unable to cast even thought or reflex Spells.
  9. Hypnotised Targets make further sts to recover at the following intervals:
st every 1 min 3 min 6 min 10 min 15 min 21 min (s+1)(s+2)/2
Max SL affected  - SL 0 1 2 3 4 5 s

The Effect may also be removed by e.g. Dispel Magic.
