Effect of Throw:

8 to 17 Insanity

18 to 20 Caster sinks 3 to 1 * d6 feet into a Tar Pit of G = 4

21 to 24 No Effect

³ 25 Glutinousness of Tar Pit ("G") = ((T/3) - 6) FRD

Movement Restriction = normal speed / G

Speed of Sinking ("S") = G * ((Weight of Victim)/1000) FRU inches per second

Duration: 5t minutes - t(t-1)/2

Range: 10d ft -d(d-1)/2

Radius: 5r ft -r(r-1)/2 (flat upon ground only)

Depth of Pit: h ft -h

Smoothness of Walls: DL for Thievish Climb Walls = G + w    -w(w-1)/2

Passengers: (N+1) living passengers    -2N    (inclusive of Caster - must all be in physical contact)

Notes:

  1. Turns rock, earth or metal to tar for Duration.  Has no effect on organic materials (e.g. wood, carpet, leaves), but will turn any rock, earth or metal beneath them and within Range/Radius/Depth of Pit to tar.
  2. Affects corporeal Beings only, who must make a st every second they are upon or in the Tar Pit.  If they fail a st they are in that second sucked S feet towards the bottom of the Pit and may not move with any upward vector.  If they make the st their movement may only include an upward vector by means of Gravity / Flying / Levitation type Spells or Effects or Thievish Jump (all of which are reduced by the Movement Restriction).  Air type Spells or Effects which require air (e.g. Wind Walk) are ineffective once the victim is completely submerged.  Thievish Jump has a DL of G2.
  3. Has no effect upon Caster or Passengers, who may walk upon surface of Tar Pit as if it were in its former state.  If a Passenger ceases to be in physical contact with Caster, he must make a st every sec he is out of contact.  If he makes the st, he is still unaffected by the Tar Pit.  Once he fails it, he is no longer unaffected (even if he subsequently re-establishes physical contact with Caster) and counts as having failed the normal st vs Tar Pt that sec.
  4. Whether or not a victim makes his st, he may move with a sideways vector subject to the Movement Restriction.
  5. Beings using Earthwalk / Hide in Rock Spells or Effects are unaffected by Tar Pit.
  6. A victim who reaches the edge of the Pit may attempt to climb out in every sec he makes his st.  If he cannot get sufficient leverage from the lip of the Pit, he must use Thievish Climb Walls.
  7. Weight of Victim includes body weight (the weight of a man is 100(Bd+7) wt pts).
  8. Movement Restriction only applies to those parts sunk into the Tar Pit.
  9. Spell Casting when the relevant parts of the body are engulfed by the tar takes a ratio to Actions of G.
  10. Once the mouth/nose is engulfed by the tar, the victim will suffocate.  The effect is similar to drowning.  If he does not panic, he may hold his breath and/or breathe by Create Air Spells or Effects.
  11. An engulfed victim cannot see through the tar without X-Ray Vision or Earthsee type Spells or Effects.
  12. Victims can be hauled out of the Tar Pit e.g. using ropes.  Victims may be able to do this themselves (e.g. using a rope with a grapple).  If a victim being hauled out (by whatever means) fails a st, he will still be sucked S feet towards the bottom of the Pit, but the method of hauling (even by himself using a grapple) may still give him an upwards vector.
  13. On the expiry of the Duration, the Tar Pit reverts to its former state.  Any victims caught in it are expelled, and any tar in their bodies turns to dust.
