Westernmost City of the Kingdom of the North |
Grinen is the third largest city in the Kingdom of the North, having a population of c45,000 souls. It produces a feudal levy of 140 huscarls, 240 bondi, 360 militia, 100 archers (total 840 troops), 140 horses and 16 ships, taking 1 day to raise.
After the First Northern Civil War, from 2172 onwards, Grinen fell under direct Royal rule. The old Castle of the Dukes of Grinen was raised, and a new Royal Castle built on the hill above, held by the Warden of the West March.
By the Treaty of Bjarmigen, in the Year 2500, which settled the Second Northern Civil War, Grinen and the old West Riding of the West March were granted as Church Lands to Harrek, Lord Protector of the North (and former leader of the religious uprising), who was granted the old title of Duke of Grinen. The Royal Castle was seized by the Forces of Evil and badly damaged in the Battle of Grinen, 19-23 XIII 2500, and Harrek took up residence in the Citadel (stronghold of the City Garrison) whilst rebuilding the old Ducal Castle as his new seat.
Grinen is a major port and trading centre. In its markets can be found lumber from the North Western Forest, cattle from Garf Lea, sheep from the Western Marches, and fish from the Northern fjords and coast. Its craftsmen produce fine goods in wood, leather and wool.
The worship of ESCUS is predominant, with the city being one of the more fanatical strongholds of the God of Good. However, the worship of the other Gods of Good and Neutrality (on the Good / Evil) axis is tolerated, and all have Temples in Grinen or its environs. The worship of Gods of Evil is ruthlessly suppressed, and the local Thieves' Guild and the more dubious Cults keep a low profile.
