The most fanatically Lawful Paladin of SARAN that there has ever been, or that there ever will be. Decus has always complied with the wishes of SARAN and his father (in that order). Now that he is Emperor he is answerable only to the Law and to SARAN. He has never sought to question the Laws that have governed his life, because they are the Law, and must therefore be obeyed. That is how the Empire functions.
This is not to say that he is an automaton. The Law allows him a degree of flexibility and discretion, for it is not yet within the power of mere humans to formulate Laws to govern all the many complexities of life, and he has always sought to exercise such discretions actively and wisely. He is ever fair and impartial.
Nor is he without feelings. He loves his family as is natural, and has always been a perfect husband to his wife. He is also strongly patriotic, and loves his country and his people, seeking to serve them to the best of his ability.
He well realises that the expansion of the Pure Law will be the end of his beloved Empire. But he is strong, and true to the Law which he serves. He tells himself that all good things must eventually come to an end. This is the perfect conclusion for which the Empire is destined, and he is honoured to serve as Emperor at its final glorious moment.
When the end comes, Decus XX intends to be with his wife and children in the Imperial Palace. Together they will pray to SARAN to make them strong.
At Dawn of the first Caeriad of the first month of the Year 1975 there happened three events of great significance in the Valdrean Empire.
First, the Emperor Narsus V of Aven died of a heart attack whilst in a state of ecstasy Communing with SARAN. The Goddess has never revealed the terms of that Commune. There was no evidence of foul play.
Secondly, the Crown Prince Narsus VI of Aven, as heir apparent, naturally succeeded his father as Emperor. He soon proved himself well able to defend the office, the Sword of the Emperors enabling him to rise easily to the Championship of his House.
Thirdly, the new Empress Gloria gave birth to identical twin sons. The elder boy was named Narsus, the younger Decus.
Both twins were trained from birth to be future Emperors, and were brought up in a regimen of strict Lawfulness. Narsus, as the elder, was Crown Prince, but the two received identical training. They soon completed their Ft and Cl IBT, and at the age of 12½ (exactly) they both prepared for their initiation as Paladins of SARAN. Decus prayed diligently before the Sun Diamond for the whole of the preceding Caeriad, and was so absorbed he did not notice his brother leaving.
Narsus was never seen again. Only his sword, the Imperial Flame, remained, where he had left it on the floor of the Temple. After the search for him was abandoned, the Emperor declared Decus Crown Prince and sole heir, and decreed that Narsus should never be spoken of again. He was not.
Decus’ uncle, Decus XIX, succeeded his father as Emperor by Duel in the Year 1995. Narsus VI then retired, and took up the Headship of the House of Aven. Decus XIX had previously been Director of the I.D.S., and he was a man who made even a strict disciplinarian like Narsus VI look soft. His greatest achievement was the elimination of all Chaotics from the City of Valdran in his successful quelling of the riot of 1997 by ruthless use of the Imperial Guard, directed by agents and informants of the security services, and culminating in the great victory of the Battle of Lake Zarak.
Decus XX is a great admirer of his illustrious predecessors, and seeks to live up to their example, as an Emperor of whom they can justly be proud.
As Emperor of Valdrea, Decus XX legally owns the entire Empire, and can command whatever possessions he desires. He lives in the Imperial Palace with his family, and also has access to the family wealth and estates. However, he is an ascetic who lives as simply as his status demands.
Win the Duel and continue as the Emperor of Valdrea who ushers in the ultimate Triumph of Law.
