Decus believes strongly in doing what is “right”, irrespective of the cost to himself, or to others.
The set of values by which he judges what may be “right” have always been the Creed of SARAN, the Code of Chivalry of Her Paladins, and the sense of honour of the Valdrean Nobility, all of which he was brought up to observe and defend unquestioningly.
Thus he believes that only by the imposition of order upon their affairs can men hope to improve their lot, and that the Empire is the most perfect system of government for providing the maximum benefit to all its citizens. Some men are superior to others, and must be given the scope to fulfil their proper potential, without endangering the system that serves everyone.
He recognises that there is Good and Evil within everyone, and both may be given expression within the framework of the state, but subject to SARAN’s Alliance with the Gods of Heaven, which allows the Empire to co-exist peacefully with the other civilised nations of the World.
He was therefore concerned, as a member of the Privy Council, at the strange opacity expanding from the Sun Diamond, which threatened to destroy the Empire and all its people. When the Council Communed with SARAN, he was astonished to hear that She approved of it.
He now fears that the Goddess of Law has chosen between the abstract concept of Pure Law and Her loyal Empire, and has chosen the former. If that is the case, then he finds it unacceptable. For the first time in his life he finds himself questioning his God.
Decus is not the sort of person to shirk from what he perceives to be his duty, and if that means opposing a God, then so be it. He will pursue the task he has set himself with the same dedication that he previously pursued his ultimate ambition: to become Emperor.
His sense of honour and personal charisma make him a natural leader who commands respect amongst Valdrean Nobles.
Mastrin is one of the most ancient Noble Houses, and Decus is the heir of one of its oldest families, tracing an unbroken line back to the Kings of the Almati, before the Foundation of the First Empire.
He has followed the classic path to the top, rising fast to the Championship of his House on the back of experience gained in the Dungeons, in front-line combat and in the Arena, and taking the Command of Fort Venture as soon as possible, in order to concentrate on Dungeon adventuring. The Commander is traditionally the leading contender for the Lion Throne, in semi-exile from power.
Decus married young, to a beautiful cousin of Mastrin, but regrettably their union has not yet been blessed with children.
“Cumarel”, Holy Sword of the House of Mastrin
In addition to those possessions shown on his spreadsheet, Decus has a town house in the Mastrin Quarter of the Sacred City of Valdran and a country estate in Mastrin Province on the bank of the River Shodra North of Mastar (where his mother lives, his father having died). He is very wealthy, and has access to funds from Valdrean and Kuntacian banks.
Play in character.
You must decide for yourself what objectives your character would set himself in the present crisis, and you must then seek to achieve them, in the same way as he would.
