1. Locate Metal

BTS: (for Magic Items only) = 50% (Wp) -5% per plus given by the Magic Weapon (e.g. a Sword with +1 (5%) to A, +1 (5%) to P and +1 to DAM would get -15% to BTS)

ULT: 35 hours

Materials: lump of metal (10 wt pts or more) - if attempting to Locate a specific metal, Materials must be of that metal

Actions: clasp Materials in fist

Effect of Throw:

-5 to 4       Insanity

5 to 6        Materials explode, doing 2 to 1 d6 General Damage to Caster (BTS: 100% (Co))

7 to 9        No Effect

10 to 14    % chance success = 10(T-9)%

>= 15        % chance success = 5(T-4)%

Minimum Weight Located: 1000/((w+1)2) wt pts    -w    (where w must be >=0)

Range: 60d ft -d(d-1)/2    (calculated to centre of Radius)

Radius: 20r ft -r(r-1)/2    (no line of sight required - so may prospect within rock)

Duration: t min -t(t-1)/2

Specific Metal:    (if not specified as a variable parameter, Spell will locate any metal)

Notes:

  1. A successful reading gives an intuitive feeling there is metal within the Radius, but not how much, how many different sorts or exactly where within Radius.
  2. Initial read-out is immediate, after which Caster must maintain light concentration to be aware of metal within the Radius.  The Radius may be moved within the Range from the Caster (who may himself move), using light concentration.  This can give more precise location of seams.
  3. The Radius may not be tightened after Casting, but a tighter Radius than 20 ft may be specified as a variable parameter with no minus.
  4. One % chance success roll is made for all metal items or seams within the Radius.  Metal items within the auras of Beings are cumulated for this purpose (and for calculating Minimum Weight Located). In addition, each metal Magic Item gets a saving throw (success at which removes it from the calculation of Minimum Weight Located).
  5. The % chance success roll and saving throw are not re-rolled if the affected metal leaves and re-enters the Radius.  A fresh Cast is required to try again.
  6. Misdetect Spells will normally affect the chances of success of Locate Metal Spells against metal within the aura of a Misdetected Being.
  7. The Caster may infer the presence of a Being based on the metal located. Certain spells and weapon attacks may be targeted subject to normal restrictions. Such restrictions, for example, would disallow Charmer spells that require targeting by line of sight or the presence of a mind.  A tight Radius may be required for accurate targeting.
  8. Locate [Specific Metal] Spells are normally available at Spell Level 1, with no Specific Metal minus, with Locate Mithril normally being available at Spell Level 2.
  9. Note that to prospect (and mine) for mithril a licence is required from the King of All Dwarves.  A licence is not required to locate mithril items being carried by other Beings.
