StoneSinging is an ability of certain Dwarves to sing to rock and sense its structure from the vibrations caused within it. It requires specialist Songs with combinations of notes that are secrets of Dwarvish StoneSinging Clans, with particular Songs giving negative DLs for particular types of rock. It also needs training to interpret the vibrations caused in response - or the Songs of the Stones, as the Stonesingers call them. The Songs of the Singers (as they are called) are not Spells, so do not require the expendiuure of Spell Points. However StoneSinger Elementalists have specialist Earth / Illusionist Spells which can give enhanced results (in terms of negative DLs) and may help interpret the results.
StoneSingers are employed by Dwarvish miners to prospect for seams of precious metals, especially mithril, and the StoneSinging Clans are believed to have become fabulously wealthy as a result.
T | Effect |
>= 0 | Failure: no chance of response |
-1 to -100 | -T/2% (FRU) chance of response |
-101 to -200 | 25% -T/4% (FRU) chance of response |
-201 to 344 | 42% - T/6% (FRU) chance of response |
<= -345 | Response |
Note that a second roll is required for the chance of success if T > -345.
"Response" means the stone responds to the Th's Song with a particular vibration (the "Song of the Stone") which is heard and felt by the Th, who will need StoneSinging training to interpret it. Skilled StoneSingers can interpret the density of the different rocks and the direction of their seams and faults. Dwarves who are not of StoneSinging Clans and have not been trained in the Songs of the Singers and the Stones may be aware of the StoneSing Th Ability and may attempt it by singing a song to the stone, but will not be able to interpret the response even if they hear it.
