The Lost Country

Isle of Dreams Gurdor Stone Circle The Lost Country

The Lost Country (Vanwanor in Elvish) is an area of wilderness and desert in the far WSW of the Underworld, lying between the Sea of Mizzin and the Wall at the Edge of the World.  It has only two small towns: Mothlas and Borlar, inhabited by men and elvish seafarers.  To its North lies an old trade route, little used nowadays: the Elf Road between Gurdor in the Underworld and the Lands of the Elves in the Overworld.  Due to its isolation and lack of resources, the Lost Country has been little disturbed by the conflicts elsewhere in the Underworld.

The interior is inhabited only by nomadic tribes of Sindarin Elves, who have chosen to live beneath the Stars rather than amongst the Trees.  In the Year 442 the Twelve Tribes of the Sindarin Elves crossed the Wall at the Edge of the World into the Lost Country of the Underworld, in search of the stars.  The original tribes fragmented, and new ones formed, but the Sindar are now established as the dominant people of the Lost Country.  Old tales speak also of a thirteenth tribe, of the Calaquendi, but if they survived, their present whereabouts is unknown.  The Sindarin Elves of the Underworld are sometimes referred to as the Moredhil, or Dark Elves.

The elven tribes of the Lost Country are mystical people, each tribe having its own special interest.  Most are nomadic, wandering between their Sacred Sites as the seasons turn.
