The Jeweller

You will find a jeweller in most larger towns, and in Fort Venture and Dwarf Hold.  Many cities have specialist jewellers' quarters.  Jewellers are often dwarves.

Value can vary widely, depending on the quality and weight of a particular stone.  Especially fine examples (especially of the higher value stones) can be worth much more than the above prices, even up to 500,000GP.

Most gems weigh 1 wt pt, but some (especially the lesser value stones) may be larger, and weigh 2 or more wt pts.  Pearls typically weigh 1/10 wt pt.

The Jewellers' Guild recommends that jewellers buy stones of value of 100GP or less at a 10% discount, and stones of value of more than 100GP at a 5% discount with a minimum discount of 10GP.  The recommended charge for valuation only is 1GP per gem, but valuation is free if the customer sells the gem to the jeweller.  If asked for a valuation only, most jewellers will quote the sale value.  If asked to buy, most jewellers will quote their buying price, and charge the valuation fee if it is not accepted.  However, prices quoted can vary between jewellers, as valuation is a subjective matter, local market conditions can vary, and some jewellers are more honest than others.

Valuation Spells will give an average sale price of jewellers in the nearest town.  Jewellers do not necessarily accept values given by Spells, preferring to rely on their own experience, and set their own prices.

Gems incorporated in jewellery can command higher prices, depending on the quality of the piece.
