Party Briefing re Dungeon THL/7/26

Kazaral of Fort Venture is now working with the Alchemists’ Guild of Tehmor on Alchemical Materials-gathering Expeditions.  The Guild provide Mirrors of Life Trapping on loan to trap live specimens, which can then be reviewed and Released in Fort Venture or Tehmor, but in return they require Adventurers to sign a standard Contract (the terms of which are non-negotiable).  If the Contract is signed, Alchemical Materials will be paid for at the Guild’s Guideline Prices plus 10% and nominal amounts (of 1GP per ML) will be paid for live specimens which can be resold to Fort Venture for the Training Dungeons, to Valdrea for Circuses, or to the Circus or Fighting Pits in Tehmor.  Any additional Treasure taken will belong to the Party.  Kazaral’s usual Wants List will not apply to Guild-contracted Expeditions.

Kazaral has intelligence that there is at least one Phase Spider in Dungeon THL/7/26[1], and has therefore listed this complex as a possible destination for an Alchemical Materials-gathering Expedition.

THL/7/26 is a small sub-complex situated near the Upper North East entrance to the Terûhl Dungeon complex.  During the recent Orc / Dwarf War in the Dungeons, the sub-complexes in this area were used as barracks and staging posts by the Forces of Hell, as they are close (but not too close) to the Shaft.  There was no actual fighting here (so far as is known at Fort Venture) and it has now been abandoned by the Orcs, but there are likely to be remnants of the occupation and possibly deserters lurking in the area.  Generally such places were abandoned hastily, and Orcs are never tidy (but are fond of booby traps).  Abandoned weapons, armour, shields and iron rations can often be found in such areas abandoned by the Orcs (although Hellish iron rations usually consist of dried rat - or human or dwarf meat).  Individual sub-complexes were usually occupied by the Host of a particular God of Hell, and small Temples to the Patron Gods are sometimes found.  In areas cleared by Dwarf Hold or by Valdrean Noble Paladins such Temples have been re-Consecrated to SARAN when located.

Much of the Terûhl complex has been explored and partly mapped by Adventurers from Fort Venture in the past, but it was never fully cleared.  There are no detailed maps held by the Fort of Dungeon THL/7/26, although it was marked as “Cleared” on pre-War maps.  Directions can be given to reach the sub-complex from Venture Passage.  It is likely to have now been recolonized by the Denizens of the Terûhl complex (as the report of a Phase Spider tends to confirm).

The party should ensure they take enough food and drink for themselves and their mules for an expedition of least three weeks.  The Waystations on Venture Passage are locked (a key can be provided) and are not permanently manned, so supplies are not available from them.  Any stashes that may be found there belong to other parties, who may be relying on them.  They all contain water cisterns, but only WS 2, 4 & 5 are refilled with fresh water by aqueducts from nearby water sources.  Water can often be found in the Dungeons, but may be contaminated and some areas are completely dry.  The maps indicate there is a water source in Dungeon THL/7/26, but its current status is unknown.   It may be possible to live off abandoned Orcish iron rations, as mentioned above (if one is a Dwarf, or has the stomach for stale dried rat).

When moving from the Training Dungeons to the real Dungeons, it is worth noting that in areas where rooms have doors (such as much of the Terûhl complex), many doors will be left open (or broken) by the Denizens within, which may wander out into the corridors (especially if they detect the party approaching).  Where doors are closed, this may be because the Denizens can open and close them, and they may be alert to the door being opened (or have set a trap).  Treasure is generally sparse, and Magic Items rarer still (especially in re-occupied areas like this), but adventurers are invariably hopeful of finding something.
