Binder Demon Grimoire

CARTAGO

Demon of Maps

Alignment / Host: N/L

Rank: Earl

Lord No. 272

Sex: m

DL = 26

Appears as an elderly surveyor, with horn-rimmed glasses and surveying tools, scribbling on a map until interrupted by the Operator.  Attended by cooing pigeons.

In Circle:

  1. Will present the Operator with a copy of any existing map which he can specify, and to which he could normally gain access.
  2. Will comment on the accuracy of any map presented to Him, and correct inaccuracies, excluding any locations that are secret or otherwise obscured by Magical Spells or Effects.  (NB if the map is of somewhere that is not of a fixed geography, such as Chaos, Madness and most of the Dreamlands, He will be unable to comment beyond pointing this out.)

In Triangle:

  1. Will present the Operator with a copy of any existing map which he can specify, irrespective of whether he could normally gain access to it. Pacts may be required for more secret or forbidden maps.
  2. Will draw an accurate map of anywhere requested by the Operator, excluding any locations that are secret or otherwise obscured by Magical Spells or Effects.  The features covered will be such as CARTAGO considers appropriate (i.e the Operator cannot make requests such as "a map showing all banks in Valdran holding more than 100,000GP in their vaults", but can only request a standard map of Valdran).  The level of detail will depend on the area to be covered, scale required and size of the paper provided.  (NB if the area to be covered is somewhere that is not of a fixed geography, He will provide a sample map that may represent its current geography.)
  3. Pact: will make any location secret, and if a soul is paid will even remove it from all current maps in existence (or those specified).
  4. Pact: instead of or in addition to agreeing to make a location secret, He may also agree to map it with a specified inaccuracy, and if a soul is paid will even remove it from all current maps in existence (or those specified).
  5. Pact: will add secret locations to maps, provided He is paid more than He was to keep them secret.  If they have been made secret otherwise than by Pact with Him, the price is negotiable but less than would have been paid if the secrecy Pact was with Him.
  6. Pact: will correct inaccuracies in maps due to Pacts or other Magical Spells or Effects, depending on price paid as per 5. above.

Familiars:

Pigeons or other homing or migratory birds

Notes:

  1. CARTAGO's Powers only extend to the World(s) of Anarea.  They only include fantasy worlds created by Beings in Anarea to the extent those fantasy Worlds exist in Dreams / Madness / Chaos.
  2. The following locations are all secret (for various reasons, which are themselves secret): Heaven, Hell, large parts of the Dungeons (especially in the security zones around Heaven and Hell), the Palaces of Higher Powers, the Secret Isle, the Depths of the Earth, the War Zone between Hulmo and the Lesser Orcish Empire, large areas of Ashazôrg and of Gabilkhazâd-Dûm, the Heart Grove of Corinenda in Mírlinnyrn, Castle Bjarmigen and the Headquarters of the I.D.S.  CARTAGO may claim that such places do not exist.  This is not necessarily an exhaustive list (some places being too secret even to mention here).
  3. Some of the above locations may also be protected by inaccuracy Pacts.
  4. It also appears from those maps that do exist that the Valdrean Imperial Library is either protected by a powerful and subtle inaccuracy Pact or is somehow affected by Chaos.  CARTAGO will usually claim that the place is unmappable, but it is impossible to pin Him down as to why.
  5. The more obsessive Binders of CARTAGO make Pacts to protect dummy locations with secrecy / inaccuracy in addition to those locations they really wish to protect.  Locations may also be protected with secrecy / inaccuracy long after the reason for their being so has expired, as CARTAGO can be lax in requiring time restrictions on Pacts.
  6. It is possible to create false maps, which CARTAGO's Powers may then potentially make available to others.  But this does not guarantee that CARTAGO will provide such a map in response to a request which is not sufficiently specific, and CARTAGO may comment on the accuracy of the map unless there is an inaccuracy Pact with Him.
  7. The fact that a map may be published elsewhere on this website does not mean that it is not secret.  Such maps may or may not take account of inaccuracy Pacts.  The degree of secrecy and/or inaccuracy of a location may also vary depending on the historical date.
