Range:    5d ft    -(4+d(d+1)/2)    If Cast on self, there is no Range minus. If Cast on another Being or an object, Range is at least 0 ft, so there will be a Range minus of at least -4.

No. of Attributes Misdetected: n    -n(n-1)/2    (Alignment counts as 2 Attributes to Misdetect on 2 Axes)

Notes:

  1. Misdetect is a Misdetection Spell.
  2. It is Cast on a single Target Being or object.  The Attribute(s) to be Misdetected must be specified, including a false positive for each (e.g. an Evil/Lawful Being might specify that his Alignment is to Detect as Neutral on the Good/Evil Axis, or a Living Being might specify he is to Detect as not Living against Detect Life Spells and Effects, or a Magic Sword might be Misdetected to Detect as not Magical against Detect Magic).  If no Attributes are specified, or Caster's specification is nonsensical or ambiguous, the Spell has no effect.
  3. The false positive is only given if the Detect Spell or Effect would otherwise succeed and Chance of Success on Misdetect is rolled (or is >= 100%).  How the false positive is given depends on the readings that may be given by the Detect Spell (e.g. if a false positive of "Good" Alignment on an Evil Target succeeds against Detect Good, the Target Detects as Good, but if it succeeds against Detect Evil, the Target simply does not Detect as Evil).
  4. Misdetect only works against Detect Spells or Effects (being any Spell or Effect with "Detect", "Locate" or "Identify" in its title or which is defined as any of those types of Spells).  It does not prevent other kinds of Spells or Effects from correctly targeting the Target (e.g. Enchanter Spells will still be effective against a Target Misdetected to Detect as not Living against Detect Life) or different Detects from working against Target (e.g. if a +1A Magic Sword Misdetected to Detect as not Magical is targeted by Identify Magic, it will Identify as a +1A (non-magical) Sword).  Nor does it work against Thievish Activities (e.g. Detect Hiding).
  5. Misdetect functions as a Counterspell in that the T of Misdetect against a Spell of a different SL is multiplied by (CSL/OSL)2, where CSL = Misdetect's Level and OSL = Detect's Level. The SL of Detect Spells of other Disciplines is doubled for this purpose.  Clerical Detect Spells count as half their SL (FRX, as they are then doubled as above) for the purposes of comparison of their SL with that of Misdetect as an Elementalist Spell.  Note that many Detect Spells are lowish-level, which makes Misdetect more effective against them.
  6. Detect Effects that have resulted from a Spell Cast have the T and OSL of that Spell Cast.  Detect Effects that have not resulted from a Spell Cast are assumed for purposes of Misdetect to have an equivalent T of 40 and OSL of 4, except as may be expressly specified for them.
