Lembas

Lembas ("Lerembas" in Quenya) is the legendary waybread of the Elves. 1 cake of Gold Lembas will provide enough nourishment for 1 hard-fighting adventurer for 1 Cd.  Sometimes it is "spiced up", so 1SP or more are recovered when it is eaten.  It tastes delicious, too.  Lembas keeps indefinitely if wrapped in mallorn leaves.

The key ingredient of Lembas is highly-nutritious mallorn nuts, which are ground into a paste, mixed with other nuts, seeds and fruit for flavour, pressed into a cake and dried in the sun.  The Guild of Lembas Makers of the Calaquendi in Mírlinnyrn prescribe that Lerembas must contain at least 75% mallorn nut paste, with specified standards for various recipes, each wrapped in mallorn leaves and tied up with coloured twine to denote the different recipes.  The standard recipe, with 75% mallorn paste and no lotus or mushrooms for SP recovery is known as "Gold Lembas" and tied up with golden thread.

The Sindar Elves of Taur-Galen have a long tradition of artisan Lembas-making and limited access to mallorn nuts outside of Cor-Galen.  They are not members of the Calaquendi Guild and largely ignore its rules, following their own traditions handed down through the generations.  They typically substitute other nut and seed pastes for the mallorn paste, make greater use of berries and fruit for flavour, add fruit juice for more sweetness and use mushrooms rather than lotus for SP recovery.  Their Lembas is commonly known as "Nutty Lembas" to distinguish it from the Calaquendi Gold Lembas and is usually wrapped in other leaves.  It is less nutritious than mallorn-based Lembas, but is generally considered (at least amongst the Sindar) to be even more tasty.  The Calaquendi, on the other hand, consider it to be more of a snack bar than a proper waybread.

Local recipes vary, using the locally-available produce and traditions, but the following are the main types of Lembas that may be available from Elf Craftsmen.  They can be distinguished by the colour of the thread with which they are bound (subject to local variations).  Platinum Lembas is always bound with Spider-silk.

The exact recipes are closely-guarded secrets passed down through families.  Lembas is only sold or bartered to other Elves, or to "Elf-friends" (a term which can sometimes be interpreted loosely - e.g. in Tehmor a customer prepared to pay cash is an "Elf-friend").  It is one of the most widely-used products for barter in Taur-Galen and is effectively an alternative to cash.
