The Dream Dealer

The Guilds of Dream Dealers are the Guilds of manufacturers and traders in drugs, and particularly in hallucinatory drugs that help the customer to recover Spell Points, to enter the Dreamworlds or simply to have a recreational experience.  Black Lotus (derived from opium poppies) is the most well-known and variants of it are the usual ingredient of "Spell Point Recovery Pills", but there are many others.

The Free Cities of the South are the biggest producers and dealers in Dreams in the Overworld.  Iklaron in particular is famed for dealing in Dreams.  But Tehmor and Vavistor are also major producers and dealers, though Vavistor is more famed for its Poisons.  However, despite the competition, there is much trade in drugs between the three Cities, with several of their leading merchants having shops in the other Cities.

Dream Markets, providing a wide choice of Dream Dealers' stalls, can be found in each of the Southern Cities, Quthar and Kuntax and the Jungle Ports and in several major towns of the Underworld.  Smaller towns of the Underworld usually have Dream Shop(s).  Discreet specialist Dream Shops may also be found in Valdran, Hapral, Gabilkhazād-Dūm and Barrakizdīn, but typically charge prices up to two or three times those that can be negotiated in a Dream Market of the South.  The prices below are those recommended by the Guilds of Dream Dealers of the Southern Cities, below which it is difficult to haggle unless buying in wholesale quantities (or having some leverage over the seller).

Because their wares are high value, easily transportable and desired by the rich and powerful, Dream Dealers are often targeted by Thieves. Impoverished and desperate addicts are also a security risk. Most shops therefore employ Mercenary guards and have Protection contracts with their local Thieves' Guild.

Most Alchemists will sell Spell Point Recovery Pills and Sleeping Draughts, and some may sell Black Lotus if asked.

Products inducing particular types of Dreams may also be purchased from the appropriate Cult; e.g. Temples of Dream Demons, Temple of MIRIMI, Tree People or Beastmaster Tribes.  Many Thieves' Guilds also sell the more addictive drugs (at increased prices to the Addicted).

Some products may also be picked in the wild, but the forager needs to identify the plant correctly (as there are often poisonous lookalikes).  Purchasing from a reputable member of the Guild of Dream Dealers guarantees the effects specified below.

Experienced Dreamers will have more control over their Dreams than those without Dreamer Experience.  Taking the drug of itself does not give Dreamer Experience.

All the above Products provide one dose of the drug, weighing 1 wt. pt.  It will typically be in powder or dried form, wrapped in a package made from a leaf.  SP Recovery Pills are in pill form and best taken with water.  Sleeping Draughts are a solution in water.

Effects typically last c (2 + d4) hours.  Cheaper products may not last as long as the more expensive ones.

Addiction requires a Wp check to resist taking the drug again per Caeriad or when below 1/2 Spell Points.
