NB The I.D.S. are only legally authorised to use Demon Summoning for the purposes of Counter-Summoning operations. There is no legal restriction on Demon Summoning outside the Empire. It is however frowned upon.
Castor used to describe himself as the most brilliant man in the Empire. But that was before the Sage Tandrys comprehensively beat him in a chess challenge played entirely in their heads. He now contents himself with the title of most brilliant member of the Nobility, which he unquestionably is - having had little competition since the death of the Emperor Narsus V.
Although he sees himself as an intellectual, Castor has had the sense not to neglect the physical side of his training, and has become as formidable a Fighter as he is an Elementalist. He has specialised in Spells of the body and, particularly, of the mind.
Through his wife and now his daughter Castor is connected by marriage to the Imperial Family, and his House is therefore closely allied with Aven. Castor himself has long enjoyed the trust and confidence of the Aven Emperors, and he looks on his son-in-law, the Emperor Decus XX, with the paternal affection he would bestow upon the natural son he never had. Indeed, he helped Decus press his suit upon his daughter, Julia. Consequently, he has no remaining ambition to become Emperor himself.
Castor has never been strongly Lawful, or particularly fanatical about the Creed of SARAN. His intellectual arrogance has led him to take a more independent line, whilst remaining loyal to the Empire and Emperors to whom he acknowledges he owes so much.
He perceives the Law emanating from the Sun Diamond as the logical consequence of the Goddess of Law’s nurturing an Empire on Earth, and of the extreme lawfulness of the Aven Emperors. He doubts it can be stopped, unless supplanting the Emperor would be effective. However, he realises it is intrinsically hostile to human life, as if it continues its apparently inevitable expansion it will subsume the entire Empire faster than will be possible to escape without Magic. Castor has always considered himself a humanist and a philanthropist, and is therefore extremely disturbed by this conclusion.
With his background as an intellectual and a Charmer,
it was natural that the high office Castor should make his own would be the
Directorship of the I.D.S., a post he has held with distinction since 1995, when
he succeeded his brother-in-law Decus XIX of Aven, to whom he had previously
been Deputy. It was Castor who
masterminded the operation that provoked the riots of 1997, bringing known and
unknown Chaotics into the open, where they could be dealt with by the military,
and the subsequent mopping-up operation. Although
he claimed this eliminated all Chaotics from Valdran, Castor is not such a fool
as to believe his own propaganda. For example, he knows perfectly well they failed to find the
Secret Temple of DALA, the exposure of which is currently a high priority of
his.
As an authorised member of the I.D.S., Castor has
studied the Art of Binding, purely for Counter-Summoning purposes, and in the
strictest of confidence of course. He
has become intrigued by the way Demons, and by extension other Higher Powers,
are enslaved by Their Magical natures, and the ways They seek to ensnare human
Magic-Users. He has had several
most stimulating arguments with the Dwarven Binders of Gabilkhazad-Dum on this
subject.
In addition to those possessions shown on his spreadsheet, Castor has a town house in the Bavenne Quarter of the Sacred City of Valdran and a country estate on the wooded coast of Bavenne Province. He also has private quarters in the I.D.S. Headquarters in Valdran (but these are not his personal property). Castor is a wealthy man, from his family wealth, his income from his country estate and his cut of forfeitures from Demon Summoners. He banks in Valdran and Kuntax.
Play in character.
You must decide for yourself what objectives your character would set himself in the present crisis, and you must then seek to achieve them, in the same way as he would.
