or Sm only) at L2, or as a Sg & Sm Spell at L3.

Materials: part of the environment (e.g. dirt or
foliage)
Actions: rub Materials over Target

³ 23 / ³ 26
Chameleon @ Thievish DL 10
Duration: 30t min - t(t-1)/2 (may be terminated by 1 sec light
concentration from the Caster)
Range: 5d ft -(4+d(d+1)/2) If cast on self, there is no Range
minus. If cast on another Being or an object, Range is at least 0 ft, so there will
be a Range minus of at least -4.
Radius: 2+r ft -r(r-1)/2 Affects a single Target
only, but Target must be wholly within Radius when Spell is Cast.
Blend Speed: DL-b sec -b(b+1)/2 This is the time
for the Chameleon effect to adjust to a change in environment, where DL is
the difference between the two, determined by colour / perfume and environment, from
DL1 for a minor change on moving in the same environment to DL10 for a
complete change. Subtract the no. of secs still to be changed from the
current DL.
Notes:
- The Spell allows the Caster to change physical appearance / scent by
Visual / Olfactory Illusion (only) to blend the Target in with its environment.
It gives the Target Being a DL against Detect
Hiding and Detect Man-to-Man
when Sg is used and/or a DL against Scent when Sm is used. To use
Sg Chameleon successfully, it is recommended that the Target Being
should also Hide in Shadows.
It is not necessary for the Target Being to Hide in Shadows, however, as
the Spell still requires him to be seen with Detect Hiding due to the
Chameleon effect even if he is not deliberately hiding. If he
attempts and fails Hide in Shadows, the DL of Chameleon is reduced as per
Note 7 below, depending on his speed of movement (i.e. failing to hide
when Chameleoned but not moving has no effect).
- If cast on an object, it gives a DL against Spot
Details and Locate Hidden
Devices when Sg is used and/or against Scent when Sm is used.
Sg Chameleon is not cumulative with
Hide Devices, but does prevent
the "obvious to anyone who looks" failure effect.
- Chameleon is not directly applicable against
Truesight (which requires a
target already seen), but if Truesight were to be used on the background
object against which the Target is blending in, then the DL from Chameleon
would apply to prevent the Target being discerned, though not to protect
that background object being truly seen.
- An observer must use the above Thievish OBS Activities to see / smell a Target
camouflaged by a Chameleon Spell.
- Sg Chameleon is not cumulative with the Thievish Camouflage
Activity, which achieves a similar effect. Apply whichever gives the higher DL.
- Sm Chameleon is not cumulative with the Thievish Mask Smell
Activity or Illusionist Mask Smell Spell. These reduce or
eliminate the Target's scent (although the former partially achieves a similar
effect to Chameleon), whereas Sm Chameleon changes the scent to
blend in with the environment. The two effects do not therefore
work well together. Apply whichever gives the higher DL.
- The DL achieved is reduced (down to DL0) if the Target moves, as follows:
- Walking / moving gently / Casting Word Spell: DL -1
- Marching / moving vigorously: DL -3
- Running / moving violently / Spell Casting: DL -6
- Sprinting / moving at will / Fighting: DL -10
The existing DL is re-established on the Target stopping moving, at
the Blend Speed.
