The Undead of Anarea

The Undead are neither alive or dead.  Their souls have been captured by the Power of SOROK, Lord of the Undead, and doomed to walk the earth, shunning the light and hungering for the life they have lost.

The Undead may be encountered anywhere in the Overworld, Underworld or Otherworlds, but only at night or in darkness.  For the chances of encountering them, see the Encounter Tables.

For the Undead Specifications for individual types of Undead, follow the links below.  Note that Undead Specifications are Restricted Information.  Most Clerics have a working knowledge of the basic types of Undead and their abilities from their Initial Basic Training, and experienced adventurers will have some familiarity from encountering them, but only Evil Clerics (and especially those of SOROK) have full knowledge of their Specs.

General Notes on the Undead

  1. The Undead are unaffected by Charmer or Enchanter Spells and equivalent Effects, which affect only living minds and bodies respectively.
  2. Corporeal Undead (except Skeletons) retain the Senses (and NVR) of their bodies.  All Undead (both corporeal and incorporeal) have Detect Life as an innate ability (so Thievish hiding is useless against them).  A living Being can sense being Detected by this ability: the feeling manifests as goose bumps, the hairs on the back of one's neck standing up, or a shudder like someone has just walked over a grave.  The Effective Throw of the Detect Life ability of Undead (against defensive Spells such as Hide Life) is (10 + 3UL).
  3. The Undead (even those corporeal Undead which have Senses in addition to their Detect Life ability) do not perceive Illusions, which affect only the applicable Senses of living Beings.  It is possible to make the Undead Invisible or to Silence them (and this applies to both Corporeal and Incorporeal Undead, as both may be Targeted by Spells), but they will still be able to perceive themselves and each other in their normal way.  But Invisible or Silenced Undead will still give themselves away when their victim senses their Detect Life ability being used upon him.
  4. Skeletons and Zombies are just animated corpses without souls.  Other Undead have dead souls.
  5. The Undead (even those with souls) are unaffected by Death Spells and equivalent Effects, as they are already dead.
