Alignment is reckoned on two axes: Evil / Neutral / Good, and Law / Neutral / Chaos. The resultant nine Alignments, as represented by the Gods, Their Followers and Faithful, are, and always have been, engaged in a constant worldwide nine-way power struggle. The major struggle is between Evil, represented by the Gods of Heaven and Hell, and Good, represented by the Gods of Good. Evil is ascendant, and the Gods of Good have been driven underground. The conflict between Law and Chaos is waged on subtler levels.
Evil is seen as standing for self-interest, Good for putting others first, Law for order, and Chaos for anything it feels like, with Neutrality seeking a balance between these concepts.
